Christian Thirion Blown Glass Teapots

     For many years I represented Christian Thirion.We loved his tea pots, vases, and vessels.  We still have some of his vases and vessels, but had been out of his tea pots for a few years. Many of my customers inquired to see if he was still making them. I was unable to locate Christian even though I knew he still resided in upstate New York. Non of the gallery owners I knew had any idea how to get in touch with him.  They all assumed that he was no longer blowing glass.

   

 

     Finally a couple of months ago I decided to try again. After searching the internet I found Christian. He had  set up a new business, Chemung County candy company.  I wasn't too surprised to discover that he had started a confectionary business. After all Christian started out as pastry chief in Paris, France.  That's right French Pastry.  It was over 30 years ago after staying with a friend in San Jose, California that he got hooked on glass.  Christian has great energy and you have to love him. 

     I am very happy that Christian has sent a pair of tea pots.  With their vibrant colors they easily bring a smile to your face.Many people collect teapots. To many they are the ultimate gift. I haven't tried one of his candies yet, but they are fairly high on my list. You can check out the teapots in detail on our website  www.adammsgallery.com. They are nonfunctional.

Susan Gott Master Of Cast Glass Art

   
   
 Based in Tampa, Florida Susan Gott has been working with glass for over 25 years. She holds a Bachelor of Art from Radford University, Radford, Virginia and a Master of Fine Art in Glass from  Kent State University.

Her work involves many steps and requires an enormous amount of cultural research, skill, artistry, creative genius, and physical strength. She creates molds , then forms sand molds for casting.  Sometimes carving the sand itself.  She laddles molten glass at 2400 degrees into these molds. During the filling of the mold she may choose to place decorative glass elements, and or metal wires and sheet metal.  She then paints them with powered glass and allows them to cool.  More work is required for the finished product.  At carefully chosen places she polishes areas of the glass giving windows into the enclosed worlds she creates. Finally the glass sculptures are glued to a granite base.

Susan describes her work in these words "My work embodies my interest in mythological imagery, symbolism, and

philosophies from historic and ancient cultures as I investigate these ideas

using glass as a sculptural medium. The elements of this ancient, visual

language express the union of human being and nature. These images have

become enmeshed in my thought and in my art to create a new myth-os in glass.

My sources of inspiration seem endless. I am intensely interested in archeology and the rituals and art

of various world religions. Some of the additional influences include the work of Joseph Campbell,

the figurines of ancient Eastern Europe, the symbolism found in Indonesian and African masks, the

mysteries of the Celts, the myths of ancient Greece, the belief systems of Native American, and the

energy centers of the Chakras.

The resulting glass, with primitive qualities and metaphors, are a visual re—presentation of the

cycles of life. The human form becomes a vessel for connection to Spirit. These investigations

have opened new sources of inspiration for my work and strengthened a connection between my art

and that, which is timeless".

I have been representing Susan for over 15 years and have always admired the way she is constantly changing and improving her art.

The Remarkable World of Faberge'

Most of us have heard of Faberge' eggs.  The magnificent lavious Easter eggs created by Peter Carl Faberge' for the Russian Imperial court from 1885-1916. These celebrated masterpieces are inextricably bound up with the Farerge' name and legend and are considered to be the last great commissions of objects d'art to date.

Tzar Alexander II first became familiar with Carl Faberge' in 1882 at the Moscow Pan-Russian Exhibition. As a gift to his wife the Empress Maria Fedorovna he commissioned Farerge' to make an Easter egg, perhqps for their 20th wedding anniversary. Easter in the Orthodox church was equivilent to Christmas in the West.  Bringing hand colored eggs to Church at Easter is a centuries old tradition. They were blessed and presented to friends and family. The Tzar had a hands on involvement in the design and execution of the egg. Each egg took a year or more to make.

The tradition was continued until 1895 when it was taken up by Alexander's son Nicholas II.  The young Tzar gave two eggs each year one to his wife the Emperess Alexandra Fedorovna, and his mother the Dowager Empress Maria Fedorovna.This traditon for the Imperial family continued until the 1917 revolution.

The most expensive egg was given in 1913.  At the time it cost 24,600 roubles, an amount equal to over 2.8 million US dollars. Amazingly of the 50 eggs made for the Imperial family from 1885 until 1916, 42 survive today.

After the revolution of 1917 the Bolsovics took over.  Faberge' fled the country for Switzerland where he died in 1920.   The company has changed hands a number of times since then.  In 2007 it was aquired by the English firm Pallinghurst. In September of 2009 Pallinghurst decided to drop the magnificant crystal, china, and glass figures from their line and specialize in high end jewelry.

I was fortunate enought to obtain  a small amount of the Faberge' crystal for the gallery.  I have Martini, Champagne, cordial, and wine glasses, as well as a very nice vase.
